Here's the order we work in, every time.

• We wash the car first. Clay only works on a clean surface, so skipping this step just grinds dirt into the paint instead of pulling it off.
• We spray a lubricant onto a small section, usually one body panel at a time.
• We glide the clay bar across that section using light pressure, letting the clay grab the bonded stuff off the surface.
• We knead and fold the clay as it picks up grime, so we're always working with a clean surface on the bar itself.
• We wipe the section dry and move to the next panel until the whole car's done.

You'll feel the difference mid-treatment. Run your hand over a section we've already done next to one we haven't, and it's like night and day. That squeaky, glass-smooth feel is the paint you're supposed to have.

Usually, the hood and roof need the most work since they catch the most airborne stuff sitting outside. And once the clay bar step is done, we're usually rolling straight into a wax or full body wash to lock in that clean surface.

How long does it take? Depends on how much buildup we're dealing with, but a full car usually runs somewhere in the neighborhood of an hour when it's paired with a wash.
